Why I'm building TaxMaxi

For years I ran my Solana wallets through crypto tax tools and then spent hours fixing transactions by hand. So I built the thing I always wanted myself.

Maximilian Ast

Founder of TaxMaxi

Hi, I'm Max. I've been working in crypto for years and have written smart contracts on EVM chains and on Solana. On Solana I've traded, staked, and picked up more memecoins and airdrops than was good for my taxes.

Still, every tax year went the same way: load my wallets into a tax tool, then spend hours fixing transactions by hand.

Where the hours went

  • Transactions that showed up as "unknown", which I sorted one by one.
  • Transfers between my own wallets that suddenly looked like sales.
  • Small tokens with no price, or with one that couldn't possibly be right.
  • Staking and DeFi read as something else entirely.

The absurd part: I know what happens inside a transaction. I've written smart contracts that trigger exactly these transactions. And every spring I still sat there redoing by hand what a program could have read.

The math isn't the hard part

The German tax rules for crypto are manageable. A swap counts as a sale (paragraph 54). Hold a token for more than a year and the gain is tax-free (paragraph 53), and if your gains for the whole year stay under €1,000, they are too. That's § 23 of the income tax act and the finance ministry's letter of 6 March 2025, which tells tax offices how to treat crypto.

The hard part is reading. Was that a sale, or just a move between two of my wallets? An airdrop, or a reward? The blockchain shows what moved, but not why.

A move between your own wallets keeps its purchase date. A sale within a year is taxed. Same movement, two answers.

So I built it myself

TaxMaxi reads every transaction by fixed rules and values it in euros at the minute it happened. Every number says which rule applied and which paragraph of the ministry's letter it rests on. Where the rules run out, TaxMaxi doesn't guess: it asks you, with a suggestion, and you decide.

Here's what that looks like: three rows from a sample report TaxMaxi worked out. A memecoin swap, an airdrop, and a transfer between two of your own wallets. Click a paragraph number and the letter opens right at that spot, in the German the ministry wrote it in.

    • Disposal. A swap, a sale or a payment disposes of what was given. Gains within one year of acquisition are taxable. Rn. 53, 54
    • Proceeds. Proceeds are the market value of what was received, or of what was given when the received has no price or the disposal was a payment. Rn. 58, 60
    • First in, first out. Lots are kept per wallet and token; the first acquired is the first disposed. Rn. 61, 62
    • Holding period. The year runs from acquisition to disposal and restarts at every exchange. Wallet times count for direct trades. No ten-year rule. Rn. 55, 63
    • Fees. Fees paid to dispose are Werbungskosten, and count only against taxable disposals. Rn. 57, 59

Today I do my own tax reports with TaxMaxi, across all the Solana protocols I use. And believe it or not, I actually enjoy it.

If you want to try it, there's a sample wallet, no sign-up needed: open the demo. And if something looks off or you're missing something, just message me. I read everything and reply myself.

FYI: I'm not a tax advisor. TaxMaxi does the math and shows every step, but what you file is up to you.

Questions

Which wallets can TaxMaxi read?

Solana wallets today, whichever app you use them with: Phantom, Solflare or another one. You add the public address, and that's all TaxMaxi needs. More blockchains are coming, Ethereum next.

What happens when TaxMaxi doesn't understand a transaction?

Then it doesn't guess. The transaction goes into the review: TaxMaxi shows you what moved and suggests an answer, and you confirm it or pick another. While a year still has open questions, its report can't be downloaded.

Can I try TaxMaxi before I pay?

Yes. The demo shows TaxMaxi on sample wallets, no sign-up needed. With your own wallets, the first transactions are free.
